Full time (FT) students undertaking this module will also be undertaking the same project in Design Studio A and some of the work and outputs from that module will be used for and inform this professional practice module. You will have been split into groups to work on different live projects in the Design Studio A module. Part time (PT) students will be using their own live project work which they undertook in the first year MArch Design Studio Live Project as the basis for assignment submissions. The coursework element of the Professional Practice in Architecture 1 (PP1) module comprises a group presentation to your project client and an individual Case Study. The project assignment reflects some of the aspects of the early stages of a project from initial client meeting through to outline proposals, feasibility study and presentation.
FT students will visit your potential client and discuss the possible project with client representatives. These meetings are likely to take place within the Design Studio A timetable depending on availability of the clients. PT students if convenient may wish to attend one of the meetings to refresh their memories regarding initial meetings and outline project descriptions. An allocated tutor will attend the initial meetings and the later presentation in the capacity of an observer. Prior to this meeting you should each send a short e-mail (e.g. 40-100 words) on behalf of your group to confirm attendance. Please ensure that you adopt a professional mode of correspondence throughout the assignment. This includes incorporating the project name in the subject line.
FT students will be met by the client or their representatives and outline the background to the project, set out key issues they are concerned with and give further information regarding their brief. Before choosing the project you wanted to work on you will have already received some outline information. You will be expected to ask pertinent questions to further inform yourselves about the project. It is suggested that prior to the meeting you try to inform yourselves more about the client and/or the project generally if more information is available and without contacting the client directly. Please note there is an expectation of responsible and professional behaviour. For instance it is an essential element of this module that FT students attend the client meetings and are punctual. It is also essential that you fully engage with the work assigned in order for you to meet the criteria set for this assignment. PT students should revisit their Project 2 work and reflect on it in relation to the aspects set out in this assignment brief. Presentation to the Client FT student groups will conduct a presentation to their clients confirming the brief, providing concise analysis and putting forward outline options/ideas. All FT students are expected to attend and participate in this. The dates for the presentations will be agreed early on in the project but are expected generally to take place on a Monday or a Wednesday possibly midway through the project. Case study The Live Project exercise, typically concluding with a feasibility report, will be undertaken and assessed or have been undertaken in Design Studio A. Having completed the project (in Semester One if FT and in Year One if PT), you will have time as an individual to reflect on this. You will be asked to produce a Case study as part of PP1 submitted Professional Practice in Architecture 1 UBLMLS-15-3 2018-2019 work. The purpose of the Case Study is to give an account of and critically evaluate the project, the context, the approach, the process, the interactions and issues that arose. The Case Study should be illustrated and relate and critique the following: • the remit and scope of the exercise • Background of the client and stakeholders
• key issues the client identified • the brief arrived at and substantiation of • the group response and approach • context • the process, communications and the proposals • outline of and commentary on key advice provided and whether other specialisms were required • commentary on the costings, statutory aspects, possible procurement route • commentary on organisational aspects • commentary on interactions and dynamics Your Case Study should contain: • a contents page • an appendix containing samples of correspondence, time sheets etc. Word count: max 3000 excluding contents page, appendix and sub-titles
